| lake avondale park
Just east of downtown Atlanta, is one of the first planned communities in the U.S., the City of Avondale Estates. Situated within the historic community is a picturesque 13-acre park featuring
Lake Avondale. This man-made lake, created in the early 1920’s, is bordered by landscaped banks, a small wooded reserve to the north and a bird sanctuary to the south. Residents enjoy a variety of passive recreation including fishing, birding, picnicking and gathering at the lake for special community-wide events.
In recent years, the lake park has become environmentally stressed with severe erosion problems and an increase in invasive plant growth. The jB+a Park Design Studio worked closely with the Lake Avondale Advisory Board and the City of Avondale to address these issues in a comprehensive master plan. The developed master plan illustrates solutions to these issues through the use of vegetative swales, permeable materials, structural soils, rain gardens, and native plant materials. The result is a master plan that provides walking trails, nature trails, pedestrian plazas, overlook areas, and ADA compliant activities that are all centered around a healthy and viable“living” lake. |
